The 18-32 Detroit #Pistons are hosting the 39-11 San Antonio Spurs, who are owners of the best record in the NBA, Friday night at the Palace of Auburn Hills.

  • The good: Though Jose Caldron has played just two games with his new team, with each game he’s getting to know his team better and better.
  • The bad: The red-hot Spurs are winners of five of the last six games against the Pistons.
  • The unknown: The status of rookie Andre Drummond is still up in the air for Friday’s game against the Spurs. He missed morning shoot-around with his aggravated back/tailbone soreness.

Tip off is at 7:30 pm and will be broadcast on Fox Sports . If you can’t catch the game on TV, catch it on the radio over at 97.1 the Ticket.

If you’re thinking of going to the game, you can get tickets directly from the Pistons with NO FEES

The #Pistons finally had their new point guard in uniform Monday night in New York, but the Knicks spoiled his first game as a Pistons dominating them for another time this season with a 99-85 win.

Key Points:

  • The Knicks torched the Pistons with the three ball making 10 of their first 18 triples before halftime and finishing the game 14-of-34.
  • This game seemed over before it even started and when Detroit was down 26 in the second quarter the only real thing to do was watch and see how Calderon was doing with his new team.
  • Jose started the game at the point and led the Pistons with 15 points and zero turnovers in his 26 minutes on the floor. Though he didn’t rack up the assists, dishing just three, that part of his game will come as soon as it take him to get comfortable with his teammates.
  • Andre played just eight minutes before leaving the game with a back injury. No word on the seriousness of the injury or his status for the game against the Nets on Wednesday night. Too bad he didn’t play more, his lone two points came on this dunk from a Monroe feed in the face of Tyson Chandler who stepped aside for the young fella.

  • Carmelo Anthony continues to play well and destroy the Pistons at the same time, he led all scorers with 27 points.

  • Singler, who did his best to slow down Anthony, finished with five points.
  • Brandon Knight started at the two guard alongside Jose. Brandon shot 2-of-10 for five points in 28 minutes on the floor.
  • It was Rodney Stuckey who had a better night with 14 points, four assists and seven boards and three steals in 30 minutes.
  • What’s the deal with Greg Monroe and his turnovers this season?
  • Greg put up another double-double scoring 14 with 10 boards, two assists, a steal and two blocks shots. He had five of the Pistons 12 turnovers on the night.
  • Jerebko has cracked the rotation and was in early for Detroit. He finished with eight points in 16 minutes on the floor.

  • Bynum with 13 points and 3 turnover in 21 minutes.
  • The Pistons just don’t know what to do with the Knicks who have beaten them handily in every game this season.
  • Sheed may be back by after the All Star break for the Knicks.
  • Detroit, who has lost six of their last eight games are now seven games back of the last playoff spot in the East.
  • To Brooklyn on Wednesday.

The 18-30 #Pistons are in New York for the second game of a back-to-back against the 30-15 Knicks.

  • The good: JOSE WILL PLAY! Jose Calderon has been cleared to play against the Knicks.  It’s possible that in limbo PF Jose Calderon will be able to take the court for the Pistons against the Knicks.
  • The bad: Heading to New York and playing a back-to-back after losing a heart-breaker at the Palace to the Lakers Sunday afternoon won’t be easy. Add the fact that the Knicks have owned the Pistons recently will make for a difficult night in the big city.
  • The unknown: Will Greg Monroe be able to keep putting up big numbers? How will Knight, Bynum and Stuckey adjust to the new rotation once Calderon starts playing?

Tip off is at 7:30 pm and will be broadcast on Fox Sports. If you can’t catch the game on TV, catch it on the radio over at 97.1 the Ticket.

The 18-29 #Pistons are hosting the 21-26 Lakers or a Sunday matinée at the Palace of Auburn Hills.

  • The good: The Pistons beat the Lakers the last time they were at the Palace and could very well do so again with the way they have been playing.
  • The bad: Detroit has lost the six of the last seven against the Lakers.
  • The unknown: Will the US clear the Pistons new PG Jose Calderon for duty? If he still can’t play at least he’s making the best of it to lean the new system.

Tip off is at 1:00 pm and will be broadcast on Fox Sports Plus. If you can’t catch the game on TV, catch it on the radio over at 97.1 the Ticket.

edt here. Detroit wins by (looks at score) 117 Detroit, 99 Cleveland.

Nat is taking a vacation.  Sitting on the beach.  Sipping Mai-Tai’s watching the sunset.  Cell phone turned off.  A big floppy hat — you get so pale in Detroit in the winter, need to protect the complexion.  She picked a good time.  Right now the airplane disaster which has been the Detroit Pistons for the past four years is in a holding pattern, as we wait for a new captain to get helicoptered on board.  Jose Calderon promises to be the first point guard we have had since Billups.  But apparently USA is worried this Canadian is here to steal our jobs so we have to wait for his work visa.  By the time it arrives Nat will be back, tanned and refreshed and ready to give us her take on the new look Pistons.

  • But for tonight we played the Cavs.  Starting lineup we had Stuck in for Prince, moved Singler over to the SF and for the first quarter we ran and ran.  We ran like we have never been able to run with Prince on the team, who no matter how good he is, Prince is an I’m sorry an extra-large serving of molasses.  Efficient molasses but still.   Watching an uptempo game like this is fun.  Of course this lineup is normally bad for Stuckey he doesn’t have the ball in his hands, reduces his effectiveness but the good thing is his efficiency seems to be a better with this setup, 14 points in greater than 50% shooting.  Or it could be the Cavs are awful.
  • There was certainly a battle, man to man, Kyrie against Knight, both going straight to the rim against each other. The difference is this Cav’s team is terrible.  So Irving got no help.  And this pistons team is gearing up for that 8th playoff slot.  There is just no way the Cavs could win this game with attitudes like that.  And Brandon took him to the cleaners too.  Brandon had 20 points Irving a mere 14.  Knight had 10 assists TWICE as many as Irving. Really outplayed him tonight.

  • Recently the big penguin Andre Drummond is hearing comparisons about his game and the greatest center of our generation, Shaq.   Love to see how humble he still is.  Everyone loves the big penguin.  Bynum and Drummond are awesome together, they trust each other.  And the usual assortment of Bynum Drummond dunks.  However, Drummond with reduced minutes here, but I’m happy with this decision by Frank, because Drummond is our Death Star, we didn’t need to play him huge minutes tonight.  I think if the Cavs had challenged us we would have played him more than 18 minutes.  The Big Penguin had 4-4 shooting with a mere 5 rebounds.
  • With less Prince, we got to see a bit of Jerebko and some more of English.  English is really just not ready for the NBA, needs more D-league, more summer league, 15 minutes for English.  Jerebko needs his shot to go in, simple as that, until it does, or until he stops doing to Frank (come on Jerebko quit eating Frank’s donuts) it looks like he will be limited from here on out.  6 minutes for Jerebko.
  • I do have to be honest I didn’t keep track of this cavs team other than to watch Kyrie because without “Sideshow Bob” Verajao this team has Kyrie and . . . are looking at a #1 draft pick that’s about it.
  • It was kind of nice watching the cavs with this 2013 Piston’s team.  Not much to worry about, we are just too much better right now.  Relaxing even.  Certainly if you felt thirsty no need to wait for a time out.
  • Charlie is a funny guy he’s great at the three-point but 30 something percent at the free throw line.  Forget hack a penguin, hack Charlie V,  it’s way better.
  • There was a Middleton and Kravtsov sighting in garbage time.
  • Singler had an absolutely terrific game.  His shot went in and because it went in he just kept shooting all night, 9 for 17, that’s Prince efficiency.

Kyle-Singler-Pistons-vs-Portland

  • Bynum was super efficient tonight.  Bynum tends to play “hero ball” when we are behind (one thing I hate about his game) but when we are ahead Bynum is happy to create and only take good shots, 4-5 shooting, and 8 assists in only 15 minutes of play.

  • It’s nice to be on vacation.  But even nicer to be able to relax when you watch the Piston’s cruise to victory against the worst team in the NBA.

The 17-29 #Pistons are back home to host the 13-33 Cleveland Cavaliers Friday night at the Palace of Auburn Hills. It will be Pistons fans first chance to see their new PG Jose Calderon take the court.

  • The good: Detroit could use a game with a team like the Cavs to start the winning again, especially with the Lakers coming in on Sunday the way they are playing.
  • The bad: Kyrie Irving has totaled 47 points in his last two against the Pistons. With the shake up of the team there is always a chance they need time to get things together.
  • The unknown: What will the rotation be like? Will Calderon get the bulk of the minutes at the point, considering that the Pistons can really use his 11.1 points per and 7.4 assists, not to mention his near league leading assist to turnover ratio.

Let’s hope the Palace crowd give their the new Piston a warm welcome.

Footnote:
I’m on vacation so EDT will be updating you after tonight’s game as well as on Sunday. Go PISTONS!

It’s official, you can say goodbye to what was left of the 2004 #Pistons Championship team. Detroit was involved in a three team deal that came because Memphis wanted to move Rudy Gay.

How this one worked:
The Memphis Grizzlies trade forward Rudy Gay to the Toronto Raptors. The Grizzlies receive point guard Jose Calderon send Calderon and his $10.5 million expiring contract to the Pistons for Tayshaun Prince and Austin Daye. The Raptors also sent forward Ed Davis and a second-round pick to the Grizzlies. Memphis sent back center Hamed Haddadi to the Raptors.
Some like the deal and some don’t, but when you put nostalgia and Tayshaun’s mark on this Pistons team you realize what a good move it is for Detroit.

Tayshaun may not finish his career in Detroit, but he gets to play for a very talented Grizzlies team that has a legitimate shot at a Championship run.

Daye on the other hand probably wanted out of Detroit for quite some time. He never really made his mark and didn’t get the playing time or the patients that he needed. Hopefully he can get a fresh start in Memphis.

What Detroit gets is Jose Calderon, a legitimate true PG that knows how to find his teammates, rack up assists and score when needed. Don’t believe me, look at his stats. Even better, his 10 million dollar contract expires after this season.

It’s a win-win for Detroit. They either have over 30 million dollars of cap room after the season is over or they resign the PG they have been looking for.

And don’t worry about Brandon Knight, he’ll be just fine.

Prince was always a class act as you can see here in this interview of him after the Indiana game the first time he was talked to about the trade.

Thanks Tay, it was fun while it lasted.
