Brandon Knight Need4Sheed CartoonBrandon Knight left before the end of the first quarter from an elbow under the basket from former Piston DaJuan Summers.  Knight suffered a broken nose and is doubtful to return against the Hornets, but I’m betting he’ll be back for their next game looking like another masked man we know.

Looks like Joe Dumars was making good use of his Blackberry today trying to work deals that involved Rip Hamilton and Tayshaun Prince.

First the Tayshaun Prince deal.

Early Thursday the Pistons turned down a deal that would have sent Tayshaun Prince to Dallas for the expiring contract of injured Caron Butler and a late 2011 first-round draft pick.

So the Pistons swap expiring deals and get a first round draft pick out of it. Why didn’t Joe D pull the trigger? Tayshaun Prince is worth more to them as a sign and trade if he’s not in a Pistons uniform next season.

This is the one that hurts:

Rip HamiltonHamilton, who is owed $25 million for two more years after the current season, and who hasn’t played more than a few minutes since Laimbeer was wearing short shorts, would have been shipped to Cleveland for a future protected draft pick.

Sounds like the Pistons really don’t get a thing, but the fact is they are getting nothing from Rip and his contract at the moment no matter who you want to blame in this whole mess.

“We worked very hard through the trade deadline, but at the end of the day, there simply wasn’t a good deal for us to make,” Pistons president Joe Dumars wrote in an email to The Detroit News. If Hamilton would have been cut free, he would have become a free agent, free to sign with any team, most likely the Boston Celtics, who expressed interest in signing Hamilton.” via The Detroit News

So my initial reaction that I shared with twitter follower was:

Am I supposed to be pissed at Rip right now?….cause I think I am

Then the storm of tweets back at me followed and a good 95% of them were yes (that’s the G rated answer).

Pistons fans are upset and would have loved to see some of this mess resolved by seeing the whole Rip situation go away.

We can look at it from both sides.

I’m Rip, I don’t want to play for the worst team in the league and if I’m going to get bought out the money needs to be right.  So that’s Rip’s side right?

Right now we don’t know the final number he was offered, but he did have a choice.  He could have taken the money and played for a championship tomorrow with the Celtics who were drooling to pick him up.

So how do about 95% of the fans I have been in contact with feel?  Upset, betrayed and held hostage by a player who they once loved and respected.  In times when things are as bleak as they have been since the Pistons had horses on their jersey they wanted to see this thing settled in the any way possible.

Now for most it just looks like selfishness on Rip’s part.  Add in anger towards Kuester, and displeasure that this sale hasn’t gone through.

Pistons fans…this is limbo.

The 5-8 Detroit Pistons are in Dallas to take on the 8-4 Mavericks Tuesday night. Dallas is out to win their fifth straight over Detroit and the Pistons would like to start getting wins period.

Dallas has held seven straight opponents to fewer than 100 points, its longest stretch since the 2007-08 season. The Mavericks are among the top five in the NBA in scoring defense, holding opponents to 92.3 points per game.

SwedetasticI just wanted to remind everyone that Jonas Jerebko will be playing in the Rookie – Sophomore game Tonight (Friday) in Dallas.   I’m expecting a ton of Swedetastic highlights from Jonas.  I have a feeling he won’t disappoint.

Tip is at 9:00 PM EST on TNT, but if you want some inside info, @Ludiker a member of Team Need4Sheed is at the game tonight and promised us the scoop on what Jonas is doing in Dallas.  Make sure you are following @Ludiker and expect some live Tweeting during the game.

The Pistons vs. The Mavericks

The now 11-21 Pistons are in Dallas to take on the 23-11 Mavericks tonight. If you were hiding under a rock lately then you don’t know that the Pistons are in the midst of a nine game losing streak.

The Pistons will be without Will Bynum, who last time they played the Mavs but up a very loud 27 points, almost leading them to a victory with 17 of them coming in the fourth quarter. Bynum who re-aggravated his ankles didn’t make the trip to Texas.

Hate to say it, but the way Detroit has been playing and with their record on the road, this one is going to be tough.

Even with Rip, Tayshuan and Ben Gordon back,  the team continues to struggle.  Charlie Villanueva, who’s suffering from plantar fasciitisis, is hobbled, underachieving and was complaining about playing time. Tayshaun hasn’t gotten his groove yet, and Rip Hamilton is 13-for-54 in his three games since coming back from injury.

Another fun fact:

  • Detroit did not lead in the second half of any of its last six games.

Tip is at 8:30 pm EST and will be televised on Fox Sports Detroit. For the radio broadcast tune in to 950 AM or follow the action over at NBA.com .

NEED4SHEED GAME CHAT

Will Bynum aggravated his ankle(s) in individual workouts and did not travel with the team for their next two games in Texas.

No word yet on his availability for Saturday’s game at home against the Sixers.

The New York Daily News:

“According to one Eastern Conference executive, the Pistons will take calls on Wallace. One team mentioned as a potential destination is Dallas.

“That’s a ‘Mark Cuban move,’ ” said an Eastern Conference executive. “Cuban would take Rasheed, no question. It would be bold, but he knows he’s got to do something to spark his team.”

Cuban tried that last season when he acquired Jason Kidd, but ended up making a mistake by giving the Nets Devin Harris.

The Mavs don’t appear to have enough to get Wallace. And the Pistons would like to use Wallace’s money – along with Iverson’s – to create enough cap space to make a run at LeBron James and/or Chris Bosh in two summers.

But it’s hard to believe that Dumars will sit still as the losses mount and Detroit slides in the standings. Wallace and Iverson haven’t been a good fit. In their recent eight-game stretch, the Pistons lost four times to teams with losing marks. Then again, no one has meshed with Iverson since the Pistons traded Chauncey Billups and Antonio McDyess to Denver last month.”

It’s something to watch but my guess is that it’s long shot. I doubt Dumars would trade Sheed unless the offer is right, especially since his 13 million dollar contract comes off of the books at the end of this season. But then again who would have thought Iverson would be wearing red white and blue right now?

I also know that Mark Cuban loves him some Sheed, he told me himself. But I doubt he’s willing to part with Dirk and that’s what it probably would take.

Keep your eyes open.

Amir Johnson Says
“I was wide open, and coach has been stressing that if I am wide open, shoot the ball, I finally got the courage to take my shot.” Via The Detroit News. An impressive Amir ( 10 points, 7 boards, 2 assists, 2 steals, a blocked shot with only 1 foul) after Detroit’s come from behind win against Dallas.

“I am not rewarding guys for just scoring the ball, Amir missed some shots early and he was probably looking over to see if we were going to jack him out of the game. But he was doing everything we wanted defensively. I am telling these guys, all of them, it’s defense that’s going to get you into the game and it’s defense that’s going to keep you in the game.” Michael Curry on Amir (Detroit News)

NBA.com Video Recap of Detroit’s 85-81 win.

Detroit would love to get a win after the awful loss to The Spurs in Grand Rapids Tuesday night. Chauncey Billups, who didn’t play Tuesday, is likely to be on the court running the offense for the Pistons when they take on The Mavs.  Walter Herrmann (ribs) is still questionable.

There will be a Pistons season preview on NBATV at 7pm, with the ball tip at 7:30 pm at The Palace. This one won’t be televised locally, but you are golden if you have NBATV.  You can catch the radio broadcast on WDFN 1130 AM The Fan with the live stream at NBA.com.

A quick thanks to my boy Matt Dery for shouting me and Need4Sheed out on 1130 today, it was quite a nice surprise on the drive home from work.
