John Kuester is officially out as Head Coach of the Detroit Pistons.  Kuester’s final record totals as Coach of the Pistons is 57 wins to go with 107 losses.
You're Fired Kuester

I’ve already said a lot about the man in this post right here, so go and do reading at that after reading this.

So let the speculation begin as to who the next Pistons coach will be.  I’ll give a sneak preview of the 2nd half of the Wieme/Sitto/Bohnlein podcast, I said former Kuester assistant Brian Hill deserves a shot.  Hill, who has coached at both the highs and lows of the NBA, first as coach of the expansion Vancouver Grizzlies, and then as coach of the Orlando Magic during the height of Shaq and Penny which included a NBA Finals run.

Hill is more qualified than any current coach that is rumored to either be interested in coaching the Pistons, or who is rumored to be a front runner for the job.

I’ll never understand the fascination with wanting to bring Bill Laimbeer in or with Mike Woodson.  Laimbeer has 0 head coaching experience in the league (we just got done with similar) and Woodson is a Larry Brown disciple (we just got done with similar).  It’s my opinion that this team needs to get away from the past, and move forward in a new direction.  I know I may be in the minority, but with as unsettled as the roster is and with the uncertain future of the front office staff (mainly Dumars), I think the team would be better off with someone who has been in the role of “teacher” before like Hill rather than putting a band aid on a gunshot wound with either Laimbeer or Woodson.

Now, Hill is 65 years old and does not have that many years left in the league.  Heck, he may be tired of the run around of the NBA after the drama from last season and he may have no interest in coming back.

This doesn’t mean I don’t necessarily think Laimbeer or Woodson would be good coaches at some point.  If the team was pushing playoff contention at this moment, I’d want Woodson to be hired.  If the team were up and coming, I’d say give Laimbeer a shot, he could inject some fire into a team.  With the current roster, the new ownership group – I’d say if you’re going to give Dumars 1-2 years to re-build, you push for a guy like Hill who will give you 1-2 years and re-evaluate and see who is available at that point in time.

Need4Sheed PodcastHere is the latest Need4Sheed Podcast. Danny and I were lucky enough to have a couple of special guests this week. Dave and J.P. from The Palace/Garden Podcast joined us in our “Pistons Round Table” to talk about what we are all talking about today.

The Pistons meltdown at the Palace against The Raptors.

We commiserate about our misery that is this team right now, as well as talk about why we think it’s happening. Is it the Coach? Is it the Players? Is it management? Is it Hooper?

And why does Danny want to trade Ben Wallace?

Dave also posed a question during the Podcast that we want to put to a vote. What is the Worst Pistons loss this season? Cast your vote at the bottom of this post.

Take a listen and by all means give us your feedback and question for the next show.

What is the WORST Pistons Loss of 2010 season

43 point 2nd quarters don’t happen often for any NBA team, and when they do they often lead to convincing wins.

When you’re ahead by 25 points mid-way through the 3rd quarter, you assume you’re going to win.  The other team usually throws in the towel and plays their bench.  It’s a time where Darko Milicic used to see playing time for this team, back in the 2004 championship season.

No lead is safe with this Pistons’ team.  I can break out the thesaurus all I want to look for ways to describe last night’s 120-116 loss to the Raptors… but I’ll put it this way:  I’ve never been more embarrassed to be a Piston fan in my life, until last night.

Now that that’s out of the way, how about some highlights?:

  • Hey Coach Kuester, what’s the point of starting Jason Maxiell if he’s only going to play 9 minutes?
  • Oh and while I have your attention Coach – why does Ben Gordon only play 18 minutes last night?
  • Ben Wallace with a career night: 23 points (including a 3 pointer!!!) to go along with 14 rebounds.
  • Rodney Stuckey is improving, albeit slower than we’d all like to see, he poured in 23 points on 8-17 shooting with a career high 12 assists.
  • Jerryd Bayless wins the nightly “Guy you never heard of before, but the Pistons made him look good” award – 31 points on 10-12 shooting (nice defense Stuck).
  • Why is Ben Wallace playing 39 minutes when Greg Monroe is available?
  • Richard Hamilton – 32 minutes.  Ben Gordon – 18 minutes.  Something’s wrong with this picture.
  • Question for Mr. Dumars: Are we rebuilding or trying to win now?  Austin Daye – 4 minutes, Greg Monroe – 24 minutes, Charlie V – 22 minutes.
  • Tracy McGrady, who has been playing good as the Pistons’ backup PG only played 9 minutes.
  • Leandro Barbosa with 22 points in only 27 minutes.
  • Does this Dunk from Will Bynum make you feel better?  I didn’t for me after this one.
  • 13,000+ fans saw this game live and in person – do they get refunds?  That’s dedication if you ask me.  Pistons v. Raptors on a Saturday date night?
  • No surprise here: Richard Hamilton with a team worst -12 +/-
  • I would bet one of my paychecks that Austin Daye would score more than 12 points in the 37 minutes that Tay got.
  • Assistant Coach Brian Hill is a well respected coach in the league, and has coached a few successful NBA teams in his career.  (hint hint)

Not much else I can say.  There is absolutely no excuse for this to happen.  It happened earlier this season when the Pistons lost a double digit lead to the Bulls in Chicago.  These 2nd half collapses are becoming a habit for this team.

Awful.

  • The Ben Wallace to the Pistons speculation is gaining ground.
  • New assistant coach Brian Hill on board in Detroit.
  • Don’t miss the Pistons summer league wrap up on Sunday Night July 26, at 8 & 10 pm followed by a must see Special on the one and only Chuck Daly at 8:30 & 10:30 pm on Fox Sports Detroit.
  • Eli Zaret caught up with Chris Wilcox when the Pistons inked his contract.  Get to know him in if you already don’t.
  • For all of you who keep inquiring…Ben Gordon, Charlie Villanueva, Austin Daye, DaJuan Summers, Jonas Jerebko and the voice of the Pistons John Mason have all been Tooned. Wilcox is on his way and the sidebar with the faces will be changed once the full roster is set.
  • And by the way…you may not have been the only one who missed the Charlie Villanueva Toon….he asked me himself when he was getting one.  Little did he know he missed it…and FYI he liked it.
  • I was pretty sure Will Bynum was going to come after me with all the photoshop fun I had with his interview, but he actually loved it.  Thank goodness, I thought I was going to have to go into basketball hiding, which I would assume would involve me going to Memphis and covering the Grizzlies.
  • Summer League Video Highlights Austin Daye.
  • Summer League Video Highlights of DaJuan Summers.
  • Summer League Video Highlights of Jonus Jerebko.
  • Deron Washington is doing his best to make the Pistons.  Plus another YouTube classic from my friend Elie Seckbach with Deron.
  • Austin Daye let us know via Twitter that he signed his contract with the Pistons.  “@Adaye5: Just signed my contract haha great day about to head to Spokane fir a lil and see some friends…” If you were following Austin or myself you would already know.
  • Um…why didn’t I play in George Blaha’s High Hopes Golf Invitational? Pairing up with the Microwave would have been awesome. (Photos)
  • Chris Weber gives us his Fab Five Pistons.
