The 18-30 #Pistons are in New York for the second game of a back-to-back against the 30-15 Knicks.

  • The good: JOSE WILL PLAY! Jose Calderon has been cleared to play against the Knicks.  It’s possible that in limbo PF Jose Calderon will be able to take the court for the Pistons against the Knicks.
  • The bad: Heading to New York and playing a back-to-back after losing a heart-breaker at the Palace to the Lakers Sunday afternoon won’t be easy. Add the fact that the Knicks have owned the Pistons recently will make for a difficult night in the big city.
  • The unknown: Will Greg Monroe be able to keep putting up big numbers? How will Knight, Bynum and Stuckey adjust to the new rotation once Calderon starts playing?

Tip off is at 7:30 pm and will be broadcast on Fox Sports. If you can’t catch the game on TV, catch it on the radio over at 97.1 the Ticket.

The 18-29 #Pistons are hosting the 21-26 Lakers or a Sunday matinée at the Palace of Auburn Hills.

  • The good: The Pistons beat the Lakers the last time they were at the Palace and could very well do so again with the way they have been playing.
  • The bad: Detroit has lost the six of the last seven against the Lakers.
  • The unknown: Will the US clear the Pistons new PG Jose Calderon for duty? If he still can’t play at least he’s making the best of it to lean the new system.

Tip off is at 1:00 pm and will be broadcast on Fox Sports Plus. If you can’t catch the game on TV, catch it on the radio over at 97.1 the Ticket.

edt here. Detroit wins by (looks at score) 117 Detroit, 99 Cleveland.

Nat is taking a vacation.  Sitting on the beach.  Sipping Mai-Tai’s watching the sunset.  Cell phone turned off.  A big floppy hat — you get so pale in Detroit in the winter, need to protect the complexion.  She picked a good time.  Right now the airplane disaster which has been the Detroit Pistons for the past four years is in a holding pattern, as we wait for a new captain to get helicoptered on board.  Jose Calderon promises to be the first point guard we have had since Billups.  But apparently USA is worried this Canadian is here to steal our jobs so we have to wait for his work visa.  By the time it arrives Nat will be back, tanned and refreshed and ready to give us her take on the new look Pistons.

  • But for tonight we played the Cavs.  Starting lineup we had Stuck in for Prince, moved Singler over to the SF and for the first quarter we ran and ran.  We ran like we have never been able to run with Prince on the team, who no matter how good he is, Prince is an I’m sorry an extra-large serving of molasses.  Efficient molasses but still.   Watching an uptempo game like this is fun.  Of course this lineup is normally bad for Stuckey he doesn’t have the ball in his hands, reduces his effectiveness but the good thing is his efficiency seems to be a better with this setup, 14 points in greater than 50% shooting.  Or it could be the Cavs are awful.
  • There was certainly a battle, man to man, Kyrie against Knight, both going straight to the rim against each other. The difference is this Cav’s team is terrible.  So Irving got no help.  And this pistons team is gearing up for that 8th playoff slot.  There is just no way the Cavs could win this game with attitudes like that.  And Brandon took him to the cleaners too.  Brandon had 20 points Irving a mere 14.  Knight had 10 assists TWICE as many as Irving. Really outplayed him tonight.

  • Recently the big penguin Andre Drummond is hearing comparisons about his game and the greatest center of our generation, Shaq.   Love to see how humble he still is.  Everyone loves the big penguin.  Bynum and Drummond are awesome together, they trust each other.  And the usual assortment of Bynum Drummond dunks.  However, Drummond with reduced minutes here, but I’m happy with this decision by Frank, because Drummond is our Death Star, we didn’t need to play him huge minutes tonight.  I think if the Cavs had challenged us we would have played him more than 18 minutes.  The Big Penguin had 4-4 shooting with a mere 5 rebounds.
  • With less Prince, we got to see a bit of Jerebko and some more of English.  English is really just not ready for the NBA, needs more D-league, more summer league, 15 minutes for English.  Jerebko needs his shot to go in, simple as that, until it does, or until he stops doing to Frank (come on Jerebko quit eating Frank’s donuts) it looks like he will be limited from here on out.  6 minutes for Jerebko.
  • I do have to be honest I didn’t keep track of this cavs team other than to watch Kyrie because without “Sideshow Bob” Verajao this team has Kyrie and . . . are looking at a #1 draft pick that’s about it.
  • It was kind of nice watching the cavs with this 2013 Piston’s team.  Not much to worry about, we are just too much better right now.  Relaxing even.  Certainly if you felt thirsty no need to wait for a time out.
  • Charlie is a funny guy he’s great at the three-point but 30 something percent at the free throw line.  Forget hack a penguin, hack Charlie V,  it’s way better.
  • There was a Middleton and Kravtsov sighting in garbage time.
  • Singler had an absolutely terrific game.  His shot went in and because it went in he just kept shooting all night, 9 for 17, that’s Prince efficiency.

Kyle-Singler-Pistons-vs-Portland

  • Bynum was super efficient tonight.  Bynum tends to play “hero ball” when we are behind (one thing I hate about his game) but when we are ahead Bynum is happy to create and only take good shots, 4-5 shooting, and 8 assists in only 15 minutes of play.

  • It’s nice to be on vacation.  But even nicer to be able to relax when you watch the Piston’s cruise to victory against the worst team in the NBA.

The 17-29 #Pistons are back home to host the 13-33 Cleveland Cavaliers Friday night at the Palace of Auburn Hills. It will be Pistons fans first chance to see their new PG Jose Calderon take the court.

  • The good: Detroit could use a game with a team like the Cavs to start the winning again, especially with the Lakers coming in on Sunday the way they are playing.
  • The bad: Kyrie Irving has totaled 47 points in his last two against the Pistons. With the shake up of the team there is always a chance they need time to get things together.
  • The unknown: What will the rotation be like? Will Calderon get the bulk of the minutes at the point, considering that the Pistons can really use his 11.1 points per and 7.4 assists, not to mention his near league leading assist to turnover ratio.

Let’s hope the Palace crowd give their the new Piston a warm welcome.

Footnote:
I’m on vacation so EDT will be updating you after tonight’s game as well as on Sunday. Go PISTONS!

The #Pistons were taken down 117-90 by the Bucks Tuesday Night. If you look at the end score you probably wouldn’t realize that the Pistons actually were up by 15 points in the fourth quarter. Add this one to the list of game that the Pistons had double-digit leads and then lost the game.

Key Points:

  • The box score pretty much says it all. Everyone but rookie Andre Drummond was awful in this one.
  • The other Brandon was extremely hot for the Bucks. Jennings led all scorers with 30 points.
  • Monore scored 14 with eight boards and four assist, and if it wasn’t for his early foul trouble, Andre may not have gotten off the great first quarter start.
  • Andre Drummond was spectacular, finishing the game with 18 points and a career high 18 board in what seemed like a few minutes. My goodness he put up a double-double in just eleven minutes on the floor. He’s picking pockets, blocking shots, boxing out and getting putbacks and having one hell of a rookie season.

  • Milwaukee at times made the Pistons look like a high school team scoring on them at will and going on runs like it was a marathon.
  • Rodney Stuckey returned after his issue with the coach and put up seven.

  • No reason to go over more of the mess or look at the highlights unless you want to see some of Drummond’s awesomeness.
  • Second game of a back-to-back against the Pacers Wednesday night in Indiana.

The 17-27 #Pistons are hosting the 23-17 Milwaukee Bucks Tuesday night at the Palace of Auburn Hills.

  • The good: Brandon Jennings hasn’t had much success against the Pistons. Detroit has won three of the last four against the Bucks.
  • The bad: You can decide if this is good or bad, but I’m putting it in the bad category. Rodney Stuckey will be back with Detroit in his “normal” roll. L Frank did not comment on his deactivation, but Stuckey said he had no issue with the coach but he didn’t see eye to eye with him the other day and he understands him no playing. How many more coaches is Rodney going to have beef with? Remember his “flu-like symptoms” earlier in the season? I personally think he’s got issues. You got to play like an all-star to act like one.
  • The unknown: Which Brandon will have a better night?

The #Pistons fought to the final buzzer to beat the Orlando Magic for the second time in a week 104-102 Sunday night. Brandon Knight put up a career high 31 points and traded 3-pointers with J.J. Redick all night, but it was Knight’s consecutive threes that took the Pistons from three points down to leading by three late in the fourth quarter.

Key Points:

  • Detroit had a solid hold on the game in the first half, but the Magic came right back to squash the Pistons 13 point lead in the third quarter. From there it seemed like both teams were just trading baskets for the rest of the second half. You knew it was going to go down to the wire and it did.
  • This was a crazy finish that could have gone a different way. Just watch the final play and just how many chances that the Magic had to tie the game right at the rim.
  • Watch the finish of this one.

  • The buzz before the game even began was the deactivation of Rodney Stuckey for the Orlando game. Many Pistons fans speculated that maybe there was a trade in the works to Boston since the news came down about Rondo being out for the season with an Achilles injury. It can be a trade, but it can also be buffoonery. I doubt that Dumars would make a trade that helps Boston when they are vying for the last playoff spot with Detroit.
  • With Stuckey out of the mix Frank when with more minutes from Kyle Singler and 18 for Kim English who scored six points on 2-of-3 shooting.
  • Besides scoring doubts and turnover, the blowing double-digit leads needs to handled.
  • J.J. Redick also put up a career high 31 and looked like he cold knock down just about anything…well until it counted late in the game.
  • Greg Monroe scored 17 on 7-of-11 shooting with seven boards and six assists. He’s got to be one of the best passing big men in the league.
  • Brandon Knight may not be the best point guard, but he can sure shoot the three. Like him, love him or loath him, no matter how many points your PG score he should have more assists than zero. Despite that he played a great game. His career high 31 came on 12-of-16 shooting with five from downtown.

  • It was a Bynumite night as Will seemed to know exactly where his teammates were and when to get them the ball. Bynum finished with 12 assists and nine points. His only knock on the night was a bad shot decision with too many seconds left on the clock late in the fourth when the Pistons were trying to put the game away.
  • Andre went scoreless playing just 16 minutes, but adding four boards and 2 blocked shots.
  • Singler played well scoring 10 with tow steals, three assists and three boards.
  • Charlie V has a couple of very timely baskets.
  • Home against the Bucks on Tuesday night isn’t a cakewalk.

The 16-27 #Pistons are in Orlando to take on the 14-28 Magic Sunday evening.

  • The good: Orlando, who are currently in the midst of a four game losing streak, are not playing good basketball. The Magic have lost nine of their last 10 game at home.
  • The bad: Despite the Magic’s woes of late, they seem to be able to take it to Detroit, especially after the pummeling they took Tuesday night at the Palace.
  • The unknown: Did it really take Lawrence Frank this long to figure out that the pairing of Greg Monroe and Andre Drummond was a good thing?

The 16-26 #Pistons are Miami to take on the 27-12 Heat Friday night.

  • The good: Detroit took the last game against the Heat at the Palace.
  • The bad: The Heat have won five of the last six games against the Pistons in Miami. Losing a 17 point lead to Chicago Wednesday night.
  • The unknown: Will the Pistons ever consistently be able to hold a double-digit lead and win? This season the Pistons have lost 11 games in which they held a double-digit lead. Now that stat is depressing.

Tip off is at 7:30 pm and will be broadcast on Fox Sports . If you can’t catch the game on TV, catch it on the radio over at 97.1 the Ticket.

The #Pistons lost in heartbreaking fashion Wednesday night at the United Center. After domination most of the game, things got sticky in the fourth quarter. Detroit lost a 17 point lead, then came back after the Bulls took a six point lead.

You can say it came down to this play, but had the Pistons not buckled in the fourth quarter they could have finally beat the Bulls. You be the judge on whether Noah stepped out of bound when he saved it.

Key Points:

monroeGreg Monroe: “We had control of the game and it’s another one of those games where we lost control in the fourth quarter, but still, there were a lot of plays I could have made before that. We wouldn’t have been in the predicament we were. It’s definitely a tough loss. We were in position to win, but I think this game, the opportunities we had earlier in the game to make the deficit even bigger for them kind of came back to haunt us.” via Pistons.com

  • That’s 17 in a row that the Bulls have beaten the Pistons.
  • Before the fourth quarter started and the Pistons amassed their lead, the Bulls had to call a timeout to stop the bleeding after a Brandon Knight layup. The joy on the Pistons faces was something I haven’t seen from this team. They looked like they were having a blast taking it to the Bulls. Now they just need to remember that feeling and strive for it for 48 minutes.
  • It was a tough game to watch and I’m sure a tougher one if you’re a Piston. The United Center was packed, the Pistons had the Bulls where they wanted them. I know it’s the players on the court, but Frank needs do something when they start sliding. It was clear that they had everything they needed for a decisive win and that’s the coaches job to get them there.
  • Give credit to the Bulls for coming back on the back of Nate Robinson who played great, but to be quite honest I’m pretty tired of his antics. Call me when you win a Championship Nate, not a dunk contest.
Rodney Stuckey had one of those nights, he finished with 11 on 5-of-16 shooting with three turnovers.

  • Brandon Knight led the Pistons with 13 points and two boards and a really sweet blocked shot on Kirk Hinrich. Just two turnover on the night for Brandon, which is a good sign.
  • Greg Monroe 4-of-13 shooting for nine points and six assists. Greg I love ya but you’re almost seven feet tall…dunk the basketball.
  • Speaking of dunking, Andre Drummond is currently 6th in the league with 68, adding three against the Bulls. He finished the game with eight points, seven boards, a steal and a blocked shot. To me it’s quite clear he’s been the best player on this team, per minute in the last few months.
  • Another great game from Kyle Singler who scored 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting.
  • Highlights
  • Friday night against the Heat in Miami.
