The Pistons ran a great halftime special on The Thrill.   Will shares with us what he had to go though to achieve  his dream of being in the NBA.

Will Bynum was nice enough to answer some questions for Pistons fans to give us a little insight on who he is when he’s not Thrilling us at The Palace.

N4S: Greatest Basketball Moment?
WB: I would have to say the buzzer beater shot against Oklahoma state in the final four to advance to the championship.

N4S:Favorite NBA player past or present?
WB: Tim Hardaway/ Earl Monroe both had a flair and style that I loved in their game but I could go on and on with the list of players…..

N4S:Favorite NBA Team Growing up?
WB: Pistons because of Isaiah and Joe, they were tough minded small guards that dominated the game and that’s what I always dreamed of doing.

WB: My daughter Laila and my family.

N4S: Something you wish you could do but can’t (for most of us it’s dunk but you have that covered)?
WB: I’ve never felt like there’s nothing I couldn’t do …that’s weird but it’s true. I feel like I can accomplish anything. I am driven by people telling what I can’t do

WB: I don’t have a fave, but anything that can get me from point A to point B from my house to the gym.

N4S: One thing you wish you could change about yourself?
WB: Why would I want to do that. I am a firm believer in making the best out of your God given abilities

N4S: If you could meet anyone in the world dead or alive who would it be?
WB: Martin Luther King and Malcolm X, I’d love to talk with them now in the aftermath of their sacrifices.I’d love to see what their next steps would be in today’s world. Also, Pistol Pete Maravich because I’ve watched his film and he is someone to whom I can really relate to. He had a great basketball mind.

N4S: Favorite place?
WB: Chicago

N4S: In Detroit, we think you can Dunk over YAO….can you?
WB: I would definitely try…lol

WB: The organizations family atmosphere.

N4S: Thing that surprised you most about living in Michigan?
WB: Being from Chicago the weather shouldn’t have surprised me but after going to college for 4 years and living in Israel for 2 years I forgot about the winter hawk.

I just want to thank Will again for taking the time to answer some questions that he normally wouldn’t get asked in the locker room. He was not only a good sport, he wanted to make sure that Pistons fans know how much he appreciates the love he gets from all of you and that your cheers and comments serve as motivation.

If it’s possible to root for “The Thrill” more than I already do, I will after getting to know him a bit more this Summer. In addition to doing this for Need4Sheed he sent me one of the nicest email’s I have gotten in my years of doing Need4Sheed. Will is truly one of the good guys on and off the court.

Next step….I’m trying to convince him to come join all of us on Twitter so we can get to know him even more. Come on Will, you know you want to. If you need some help, I’m sure your new teammate @CV31 will give you a hand.

The Pistons host the 32-46 New Jersey Nets at The Palace tonight. The Pistons look to take tonight’s game to secure a playoff spot and tie the season series up 2 games all. The Nets, who took it to the Pistons in their last meeting, were eliminated from the playoffs this season when Detroit beat the Knicks Wednesday night in New York.

The Pistons need to stop Devin Harris who has burned them in every meeting they had with the Nets this season.

“He’s an All-Star this year,” Pistons second-year guard Rodney Stuckey said. “He’s improving every year. He’s just a great player. He’s crafty, fast; he’s good, man. Really good.” Via The Detroit Free Press

With four games left, Detroit is in a battle with The Bulls for the 7th seed in the playoffs. With the Bulls win over the Sixers Thursday night they moved ahead of Detroit (by a half of a game) for the 7th spot. The race may just come down to the Bulls – Pistons game at the Palace Monday night.

It’s the home stretch – Get pumped Pistons Fans, Sheed is.

The Good/Bad and More

• Stopping Devin.
• The Pistons haven’t lost the season series with the Nets since dropping three of four meetings in 1993-94.
• It’s refreshing to see that Will Bynum is working every day at being a better NBA point guard.
• More Will at Empty the Bench.
• Even more Will Bynum at Wages of Wins Journal.
• New Detroit Sports blog Motor City Sports and new Pistons blog Motown String Music.
• At this point it doesn’t look like Detroit can sneak into the sixth spot and don’t count on Orlando move up. I don’t think anyone wants to face Detroit in the first round, especially Orlando. It seems as though the Pistons are the Magic’s #1 nemesis.

• Pistons again blew a big (17 point) first half lead to make this a close one.
• Bynum was 6-for-6 from the field and 14-for-16 from the line in the fourth quarter.
• Bynum’s 26 in the fourth quarter is a new franchise record, topping the old mark of 24 held by Isiah Thomas and Jerry Stackhouse.
• Bynum scored 12 in the first 6 minutes of the fourth.

• Bynum Highlights

• From Will Bynum’s locker room interview when asked about his performance. “It’s really not me, it’s my teammates and the coaching staff. I don’t deserve all the credit, it was pretty much them, those guys out there setting the screens and the coaching staff believing in me. That’s who gets the credit for it.”
• No points for Kwame Brown who has been playing great ball in Sheed’s absence, but he did grab 9 boards and blocked a shot in 18 minutes Sunday night.  We don’t need him to score, but we do need him to do what he has been doing.  Nice to see Kwame making the most of the role he’s been put in.
• Pleased and surprised that Curry didn’t substitute the starter Stuckey for the hot Bynum in the closing minutes. “I like to get Stuckey back at about the six-minute mark,” he said. “The way things were going tonight … it was a unique night. Twenty-six points, the most ever by a Piston player in a quarter.” Via Pistons.com
• The win puts the Pistons into a tie with the Bulls for seventh in the East.
• Rip Hamilton ejected after being assessed a second technical foul in the third quarter after scoring 13 points with 3 assists.  With the importance of the game and Detroit’s playoff predicament, I’m disappointed that Rip couldn’t control his temper. It’s bad enough we lost Sheed for the Philly game, but I come to expect a little more from Rip.
• An absolutely SHEEDtastic turn and shoot long range three pointer from Sheed in the second quarter with the shot clock running down. Sheed finished with 12 points on 4-for-12 shooting, with 3 steals, 6 boards and a blocked shot in his first game back in his starting role since his injury.

• Four minutes for Walter Herrmann who made the only shot he took, a second quarter three pointer.
• Looks like we will see Will next season at the Palace, the Pistons can keep him for next season by picking up his $825,000 option.
• Charlotte trailed by just 3 with 13.3 seconds left before Bynum knocked down free throws to seal the victory.
• Nine boards for Antonio McDyess, who finished with eight points in 25 minutes.
• 14 points for Tayshaun Prince who played solid down the stretch with Will Bynum.

• Great to see Will put up a game like this especially after his recent fourth quarter struggles.
• Great play from Afflalo with 12 points on 4-for-4 shooting in 24 minutes. Forget about the big baskets, it’s his defense that always shines when the Pistons need a stop. “It’s been a two-year thing, playing when available,” said Afflalo, who made each of his four shot attempts and three 3-pointers. “Mentally, trying to stay tough and smart with the whole situation to where I’m in a situation where the minutes are more stable.” Via Mlive
• You can thank Maxiell for his lock down defense in the fourth quarter, leaving the Bobcats scoreless on six straight possessions in the fourth quarter.
• Detroit won the board war 41-38 and shot 49.4% on the night to Charlotte’s 40.7%.
• The Pistons’ next one, a road game against the Knicks Wednesday night.

Key Points:

• Will Bynum and Antonio McDyess were the only Pistons players to score in double figures.
• This was truly a game of runs Will Bynum took Detroit from 13 down after one quarter to 10 up early in the third. The Lakers closed the quarter on a 30-5 run.
• Walter Herrmann did his thing and knocked down a few threes to help Detroit capture the lead before the half.  He finished with 9 points, a blocked shot, 4 boards and an assist in 20 minutes on the floor.
• Stuckey looked out of place going up against Kobe, he played just 26 minutes, scoring 5 points with 4 turnovers, 2 steals and three assists.  He looked bad, in fact he was a -31 for the game.
• “When we’re shorthanded, more is put on his plate. Sometimes he handles it really well and sometimes he doesn’t do as well.” Curry on Stuckey. Via The Detroit Free Press
• Career High for Will Bynum who has more than stepped it up for the Pistons lately.  Will put up a double-double with 25 points, with 11 assists, 3 boards, a steal and 4 turnovers.  Numbers aside, Will did just what the Pistons needed when they needed it.

• “It’s just another tough loss,” Bynum said. “They went on that run and we couldn’t recover. They just outplayed us in the second half. I am going to stay aggressive,” Bynum said.”I am being more confident. I got an opportunity and I am taking advantage of it. I’ve been positive all year long, even when I wasn’t playing and that’s helped make it easier.” Via The Detroit News
• I must say that I can’t stand going to Lakers games at the Palace and I was glad I wasn’t in the house last night. An MVP chant for a Laker at the Palace just isn’t right.

• With the loss last night the Pistons (34-37) fell to the eighth spot in the Eastern Conference.
• Detroit (Bynum mostly) outscored the Lakers 30-14 in the second quarter.
• The final score aside, the game was pretty entertaining, it was nice to see Bynum help Detroit crawl back. It just goes to show you they really can be in any game not matter who’s on the court for Detroit.
• “In the second half it seemed like we couldn’t get no offense going at all,” said McDyess, who finished with 14 points and 12 rebounds. “Will came out of the game and he was pretty much getting us where we needed to be, dishing the ball. When he went and sat down it was like we were just stagnant. We were just standing and looking around.” Via The Detroit Free Press
• Another double-double for Antonio McDyess who’s been playing out of body for quite some time now.  Dyess finished with 14 points, 12 boards, a blocked shot, a steal and an assist.

• Kwame Brown stuffing Lamar Odom….must have made him feel good. He doesn’t put up huge numbers and he fumbles the ball like nobody’s business, but Kwame has given more that I expected he could for this team.
• Amir Johnson, from starter to garbage minutes.
• Afflalo, who started the game didn’t come back with the starters in the third quarter. He finished with six points and one rebound in 31 minutes.
• Tayshaun Prince 7 points on 3 for 13 shooting .
• Consider this game Bynamic.
• Saturday’s game against the struggling Wizards should tell us how this season may end. With Rip and Sheed back and only a handful of games left and Detroit now in the 8th spot…..this should be interesting.

And yes I need to make a cartoon Will ASAP.

• Chauncey speaks Part 1 and 2. The man wants to retire a Piston and thinks the current core should have another go at it. Billups thinks Curry is the key, “We of course changed one big thing and that was the coach and that makes a big difference.”
• Artest to Houston for next to nothing.

• Keith Langlois piece on Walter Sharpe and what his showing in Vegas does for his situation.
• “He’s made a concerted effort to get better defensively,”Curry said. “He’s playing the best defense I’ve ever seen him play. Sometimes he’s a little too aggressive, but we can bring that back. • Team Need4Sheed member has something interesting to say about new Piston Kwame Brown that I thought was interesting. “I live in LA and so I see plenty of Laker games. When healthy, Kwame was one of their most consistent rebounders, beneath Odom and ahead of Bynum. Problem was, he didn’t stay healthy but I expect Kandor to fix that. I’ve also seen him guard the post and again he was their best post defender, again better than Bynum was. Thus I’m not assuming anything, I’m going by what I’ve seen. Yes, Kwame has small hands but so did Big Ben. It’s more of a shortcoming on offense than defense. Finally anyone with an expiring contract is tradeable because teams are often looking to dump salary in order to get below the luxury tax. I don’t foresee Kwame being a superstar. Heck, I think Amir has a brighter future than Kwame does and he was a second rounder, but that doesn’t mean Kwame can’t contribute to our team By the way, it is also Elden Campbell. “
• Michael Rosenberg of the Free Press thinks the Brown signing is a smart move. “This is a smart, low-risk move for the Pistons. It might not work out, but it can’t possibly be a disaster. The Pistons didn’t use the No. 1 overall pick on Brown, like the Wizards did. They did not trade All-Star Caron Butler for him, like the Lakers did. They just offered him $4 million a year, for one or two years. That’s a lot of money to you and me, but NBA owners find that kind of cash in the seat cushions of their corporate jets. Kwame Brown is a young, strong, athletic, 6-foot-11 player with limited ball skills. He never should have been the No. 1 overall pick, but he has a place in the NBA. Brown gives the Pistons another usable piece. He has the size and defensive ability to fill in when Rasheed Wallace and Antonio McDyess get in foul trouble.”
