Josh Smith the new $56 Million Dollar Man in Detroit

Josh-Smith-a-Detroit-Piston

Joe Dumars landed his free agent in Josh Smith. Smith has agreed to a four-year $56 deal with the Pistons.

According to Yahoo Sports the Pistons pursued Smith the hardest of all free agents.

Like it or not this was the best that Detroit could do. It’s not like Detroit sports fans don’t know that high profile talent don’t want to come to Detroit. With Dumars missing out on Jose Calderon, who signed a deal with the Mavericks and Iguodala who is now a Warrior, if he didn’t land Smith who know what he was or was not going to do.

I’m not a huge Smith fan, nor am I a hater, I mostly worry about his attitude and his inability to knock down jump shots. Do you like the deal?

  1. Bellllissimo says:

wow. Really thought he was going to Houston with Dwight Howard. Good news is that it’s not a max deal. I don’t think Joe Dumars overpayed at all.

And there’s no denying one thing, pistons are getting freaking big! If greg monroe could jump a couple inches higher we could have probably the strongest frontcourt in the league defensively.

I don’t like the idea of relying on Josh Smith for anything but he is a nice piece to at least getting to the playoffs.

Joe dumars next step is to acquire some draft picks for next years deep draft, since I assume we gonna get enough wins to be out of the lottery

    • Drew says:

What does jumping high have to do with strength? Or are you talking about how good the frontcourt would be?

      • Bellllissimo says:

yeah i was talking talent. if he cant protect the paint its a big problem even with josh smith and drummonds athletic ability

  2. Drew says:

Badly need a trade for Rondo. Give Boston Stuckey and Knight or Caldwell. I don’t care. Give them any of Detroit’s guards. There is nobody to feed the ball to the frontcourt right now.

    • Jake says:

Not too excited yet, but I think rondo and Smith played high school ball together, they are friends nonetheless. I also saw that we might be able to get rondo w/o giving up dre or moose, if that happens then I’ll be excited. I still think we should have signed JR for 6 million (sorry nat)

    • Joe says:

Rondo wouldn’t be a great fit, IMO. With Smith, Monroe, and Drummond in the lineup, we really need to have good outside shooters at both of the starting guard positions.

  3. terry says:

Big time deal here. a reasonable contract for a immediate impact player at sf. If Joe locks up a true starting pg this offseason is a total win. Calderon, what a dummy taking chump change to play for a 40 year old Dirk. We about to pound the Mavs, go Pistons!

  4. Dan says:

    Good move.

the pistons needed more than Monroe and Dre in the paint. There are more than enough minutes to around to not have another quality power player.

We saw what it looked like with no Dre. The Dre/Moose combo cant be on the court all the time.

Is the future Moose playing all game, at both 4 and 5? then Smith can do time at 3 and 4 and Dre at 5. I say yes, but need to see cheeks draw up how to play Smith at 3 with Dre and Moose on the floor. Will have to be a lot of running and moving, even in the half court game.

I believe VC, JJ ad Slava are on the payroll for next yr? With Knight, Singler and picks we don’t need the long range from CV. I’d like to see JJ grow from working with Smith and Cheeks (of course). He still needs to find his game a bit. And the same times 10 for Slava. So I’m on the ‘get rid of CV’ bandwagon now. If there isn’t a deal to be had I’d amnesty him. And I love Maxiell, but no need to sign him to a new deal. If We are going to sign a bench big, We need a real 5.

OK, so paint secured – now playmaking is the issue. The draft gave us hope on perimeter shooting.

A spade is a Spade – we need Rondo.

With Smith in place the trade, there are a lot of options for trades. Well done Joe D for pushing this one quickly and thus being in the game for Rondo with more options.

Who else is out there except Rondo?

We need someone with more than 1-2 years left. No point getting a veteran in to show Knight the ropes. Knight is a combo. So no need to get Billups back. Need the PG that bonds with the rest of the crew now, and play with them for 5 yrs. Lin? Still want Rondo.

    • terry says:

Jeff Teague is still unsigned and the Hawks front office havent been very accomodating to their free agents, and the rumor has it he’s a bit disgruntled. Teagues a solid pick up if the Cs want too much for Rondo.

  5. jo-el says:

I was kinda hoping we would nab Iguodala, but a Smith focused on what he can do best (rebound, block, and fly) could be a good add. I agree with everyone else, get a PG like Rondo or sign Billups on as a coach/mentor to teach Knight how to play PG.

    • to be continued......... says:

      Question
To get Rondo would we really want to part ways with Monroe and or BK?? hummm
Joe has more work to do because Stuckey, CV is still on the team but I’m excited … Joe can once again spend and build this team .. Sheed will keep him in line .. Keep on working Joe..

      • edt says:

because of the new collective bargaining agreement you have to spend 90% of your cap otherwise you throw away the money.

so right now charlie v and stuckey are actually very good players for us, they eat up some cap space and don’t have much time left on the contact.

other teams desperate to get back up to 90% will want to grab players like stuck and charlie, it’s a weird world we live in with the new cba.

  6. Need4sheed says:

Getting Rondo would make me the happiest person in the world! I know it’s far fetched, but man! The thought of it. I can’t stand Knight. So to get Rondo and get rid of him smh. Please let this happen some how…

  7. josh blue says:

Please, for the love of all that is holy, stop talking about bringing Rondo to Detroit. I live in Boston. Ive met Rondo a couple times. Red Bull and him partnered to renovate my court even. HOWEVER:

    1. cant hit jumpers. 2. cant hit free throws 3. is a coach killer. 4. has attitude problems. 5. only plays when he wants to 6. get bored easily 7. he isnt a good defender. 8. he’s small

Rondo is easily the most overrated PG in the NBA

  8. josh blue says:

and not for nothin': the guy that could coach brandon knight up? a certain AS champion point guard (who should be in the HOF), who just happens to coach the Pistons

Mo Cheeks can absolutely mentor him

  9. Julian says:

Smith was the Hawks best player for last 5 or more years.
If you look at our current depth chart, SF and PG are our 2 big weak links at the starting position.

Smith is a better scorer, rebounder, and defensive player than Prince was in his last year with Detroit.
Singler is a nice player off the bench but not really a starting talent.
Rondo may be over rated but he would still be a huge upgrade to our roster.

    • edt says:

except he cant play SF because he has no jump shot and turns the ball over like a bingo machine at that position. he’ll need to be slotted in at pf

  10. edt says:

rondo is a bad fit, josh smith is a bad fit, we have drummond and monroe who can’t hit anything outside 15 feet, jerebko lost his starting position and eventually his role off the bench because he couldn’t hit 3’s to spread the floor.

this is just dumb. I guess cheeks is going to have to start monroe at the 5, smith at the 4, and have our best player come off the bench for a 3 big rotation each player getting about 30 minutes. I’d rather see monroe & drummond start josh off the bench but you can’t do that to an all star (even tho all he did was a dunk contest) he’ll pitch a hissy fit.

You can’t give joe dumars money. On the other hand, I do want to know what bar he drinks at, good chance he’ll buy everyone drinks if it’s the day after his payday.

    • Jake says:

I agree. No way that Smith moose and dre can all play and be effective. I can’t see them bringing one off the bench, it would probably be Drummond if they did, which is stupid. only thing I can think is trade moose, but I like him better than Smith. Bad signing, should of went for a trade for like a granger to eat up our Cap until next year. It will not work, and would be a shame to see moose leave town because of another bad signing.

    • terry says:

If Monroes still on the team which I believe he will be then Josh Smith is playing the starting 3 or else I dont think joe signs him. People are talking like he cant hit an outside jumper, like all his point come off dunks or something, but it aint true. Monroe already stated he was expanding his range to better fit with Drummond, so what’s the difference? What J smoove brings us is athletic wing scoring at roughly 18 per 3.5-4 assist per to go with solid d 8 boards, 2 blocks, 1-2 steals per night. Monroe will spread the floor, Smith can hit a jumpshot so he’ll be a threat if left unguarded away from the basket, and the trio collectively get all rebounds. Perimeter scoring will come in large part from the guard positions and the bench. Look good to me

      • Markov7 says:

my friend did u watch ne hawks game ? smith is not THAT good shooter screw the stats lets see what he brings to team:dunks-already have it,rebounds-so so but lets say we already have that,D-look under shooting section
so basicaly like edt said i really hate this move(alibi move by joe d?)id rather that he gave few mills more to granger landed in palace than this guy and if moose goes away from team cose of smith i d be really pissed as a pistons fan

        • terry says:

He (J. Smith) doesn’t have to be. He shoots just well enough that he has to be guarded away from the basket. Monroe also is decent away from the basket and still improving. The Sf forward position doesnt have to be one for your 3pt specialist. Moose is going somewhere alright… to the playoffs with the Pistons.

          • edt says:

j smoove shoots around a 25% mid range jumper.

The best defensive plan against the hawks last year was to not guard him in that range, because the coaches could not stop from from taking that shot.

He is the single worst mid range shooter in the NBA among those who shoot the mid range jumper a lot.

          • edt says:

            from sean deveney

Take all the NBA players who had 300 or more possessions as spot-up shooters last year, and you’ll get a list of 13 names. Eight of those (Klay Thompson, Danny Green, Wesley Matthews, Carlos Delfino, Caron Butler, Ryan Anderson, J.R. Smith and Chandler Parsons) averaged better than 1.0 points per possession on those spot-up shots. Two (Metta World Peace and Chris Bosh) averaged 0.90 points per possession. Two more (Luol Deng and Corey Brewer) were at 0.85 points per possession or better.

Only one player jacked up that many spot-up shots and failed to reach the 0.80 mark. That would be Josh Smith, who averaged just 0.788 points per possession, by far the worst in the NBA.

  11. Adamd says:

This is not a good acquisition. Tired of Dumars making these ill advised trades. He needs to make a big time move to remedy any chance of the playoffs

  12. Bellllissimo says:

Well guys remember when boston acquired ray allen on draft night and everyone was like omg what a bad trade why? but then kevin garnett was traded to them a few days later or something and everyone thought it was great

  13. Sable says:

To everyone saying he’s not a good fit, all I have to say is we had floor spacers in Ben Gordon and Charlie V. How did that go? Give me a defensive stalwart any day of the week.

  14. Rai_from_phl says:

Moose, Drummond, and Smith are big bodies for setting screens for slashers and shooters, good rebounders, and athletic big men who can run the length of the court on fast breaks. I approve of this signing.

  15. Billupsfan says:

Remember fellow need4sheeders, we still have the amnesty clause so even if JS turns out to be the CV/BG type we can still waive him without cap issue

    • edt says:

correct me if i’m wrong but amnesty can only be used on contracts signed BEFORE the new cba . . . so basically charlie is the only guy we can amnesty now and his contract is good to have it’s almost done

  16. Julian says:

I predict the starting lineup will be KCP, BK, Moose, Dre and JSmoove.
    1. KCP will be in 3 point heaven when teams collapse down on our big 3.
    2. BK will get a ton of assists when penetrates and dishes off to the big 3.
    3. Our fast break will be fantastic with Dre and JSmoove running the floor.
    4. The Pistons D should be crazy good. Lots of blocked shots and rebounds.
    5. Our bench, will be young but talented with Middleton, Tony Mitchell, Siva, Slava and English. CV will be gone soon and Stuckey will be probably be traded eventually.

    • Drew says:

You think there’s really room for Middleton to come back? And that Siva will really make the team? We have logjams already. You forgot to mention Jerebko, Singler and Bynum are all on the roster.

  17. Drew says:

If the roster stays as is, I’m thinking Bynum will have to be the starting PG. He’s the closest thing to a pure passer on this team and we need one with all the offensive options in the frontcourt. Bynum and Knight can start, with Stuckey and Caldwell coming off the bench and English as the 5th guard. The only other starting option is Knight and Singler at 1 and 2, unless we want to go back to Knight and Stuckey.

  18. DJ says:

Reading all of the comments are making me dizzy. As fans we all tend to get overly excited & disappointed at the same time. I am happy that we finally landed a big time free agent. flaws aside, Smith is an all star talent that has spent his entire career playing out of position in ATL due to their lack of size. His numbers are very solid across the board & above the league average for the f position in rebounds, assists, steals & blocks. He has the ability to hit the 3, he isn’t the greatest 3 point shooter at the 3/4 position but neither was Sheed at one point. If we stand pat with what we have, we have potential to be a 6-8th seed with this move. We definitely need a PG or a SG that can shoot the 3 but we have a very young & talented team & with most of our guys having started at 1 point, we actually have more depth. We have a team full of combo players. our guards are all combo guards & our Forwards are all combo forwards so switching positions on the court will be interesting to say the least. I am interested to see what Joe does next & I am excited to see how Smith fits into the fold. I am much more excited for next season than I have been for the last 4-5 years. #gopistons

  19. Drew says:

Whatever we do, don’t trade Monroe in a package for Rondo! Lest we forget Rondo’s coming off a terrible injury and can’t shoot very well. The Monroe-Drummond tandem is the best thing we got going for this team. If we have to give up Knight to get Rondo, so be it.

  20. Julian says:

Calderon is gone. Maxiell, and Magette will not be back. Will Bynum is also a FA and will not likely be back. That opens up 4 spots from last years roster for J Smoove and the draft picks from last 2 years. Middleton lead the Pistons scoring in the first summer game yesterday.
the number 11 pick this year,Michael Carter Williams, had a huge game in his first summer league game (26 pts) but our KCP not so much. Zero for eight from 3 pt land. Ouch.
Joe D had the pick of the litter of the guards in the lottery this year. I hope he chose wisely. I have a sinking feeling that he did not.

  21. Julian says:

CV31 and Stuckey are both unrestricted FA next year. Guaransheed that they will not be resigned by Detroit.

  22. Big_time_Chris says:

    Atl fan here,
Jump shots aside you guys are getting a really good player on offense and defense who can rebound, drive and create mismatches. It was time for him to leave Atlanta, Alot of people talk about baggage and attitude but i think some of that was due to his frustration with being on the trading block for so long. I think after 27 years of living in one place a change will rejuvinate him. Not sure if Charlie Vilanueva or Ben Wallace have you gun-shy but with the new salary cap theres a floor and you have to pay somebody. trust me Josh Smith is wayyy better than Andre Iguadola and much more fun to right.

  23. FutureMogul says:

    PG: W. Bynum 22mins/ B. Knight 13mins/ Billups 13mins
    SG: Rudy Gay 23mins/ KCP 12mins/ B.Knight 10mins/ Luigi Datome 3mins
    SF: J.Smith 25mins/ Rudy Gay 8mins/ Luigi Datome 12mins/ KCP 3mins
    PF: G.Monroe 25mins/ J.Smith 10mins/ J.Maxiel 13mins
    C: Drummond 28mins/ G.Monroe 12mins/ Jerebko 8mins

Pistons still have even more qualified bench contributors that didnt even make this list:
LAST SEASON K.Singler avg 28mins, K.Middleton avg 17mins, C. Maggette avg 14min. Roster competion is at an all-time high for Pistons as Maxiel avg 25mins, Jerbko avg 18min Last Year

Expect Drummond, Datome and KCP minutes to increase as season goes on.
Main/ 3pt TriggerMen: Billups, Datome, Knight
Pistons stills wont be good 3pt team, but will have many Free Throws & Dunks & Rebounds
In 2-3 years pistons will either be East Title contending or a team with a lot of Young Assets & Cap Space
