Never Say Die Pistons Fall in LA

After a promising start, the Pistons were overwhelmed by the Champion Lakers, but put on a late rally before falling 106-93. The Pistons were led by Will Bynum’s 24 points and 6 assists, while Kobe Bryant scored 40 to help stop LA’s two-game losing streak. Detroit falls to 5-6 on the young season and head to Portland Wednesday night.

Some key points:

  • Despite a strained groin, Kobe takes advantage of the smaller Piston guards en route to 40 points (including an unnecessary three pointer late).
  • For all the people who think that the team should trade Tayshaun or Rip, don’t you think they would have made a difference tonight?
  • Lakers were without Pau Gasol and Luke Walton.
  • Ben Gordon gets up there.
Photo/Getty Images
  • Tayshaun made the trip. Rip talks retirement.
  • Did Charlie V suit up tonight? I’m just asking.
  • Big Ben Wallace tried his best but was outdone by LA’s low post offense.
  • Living in LA, I had to watch the Lakers broadcast which made me angry, so I decided to mute the television. DirecTV blacked out the Fox Sports Detroit channel during due to the local broadcast, bummer.
  • Lamar Odom nearly had a triple-double with triple 8’s.
  • Hey a Dejuan Summers sighting!
  • Another Bynumite night, we clearly had the Better Bynum!

Photo/Getty Images

  • Austin Daye looked lost, while Jonas Jerebko seemed to agitate Kobe.
  • Ben Gordon seemed to get frustrated so he decided to take it out on the rim with a rim rattler.
  • Too many turnovers in a short period of time during the second quarter led to a ridiculous Lakers rally.
  • While Ben Gordon was able to get off to a fast start, he was later neutralized while trying to defend Kobe.
  • Pistons fell behind by as much as 28 points, then coach Kue went to a line-up of Bynum, Jerebko, Summers, Kwame, and Maxiell.
  • Will Bynum block was nice but the rejection of the night goes to Jason Maxiell, who also got a tech for mixing it up with the other Bynum.

  • Pistons have lost 2 in a row and look to avoid another “L” tonight in Portland.

I still believe we are 1-2 moves away from competing again.. i think a trade needs to happen to get low post presence along with possibly a high draft pick on the #1 need we need.. Austin Daye is officially the worst rookie i have ever seen.. Usually if you make it into the NBA you should have a CLUE of whats going on around you.. jonas is from a different country and he looks better than daye.. i just believe its proof that Joe Dumars cant draft worth a shit!.. ill tell u this.. Dejuan Blair in the 2nd round woulda looked good to me out there in pistons blue.. hes a beast… but daye at #15 is pathetic. B-U-S-T.

  2. The Duke says:

Rip talks retirement? where is this information?

  3. KleenGee says:

I knew it Sunday night when the Lakers lost their 2nd that we were doomed. Kobe has too much pride and fire to lose 3 in a row.

    Bounce back boys.

Drive at Oden and Aldridge to get them in foul trouble.
Start Kwame over Villanueva to set the defensive tone.
Smother Roy with Stuckey, switch Gordon to cover Blake.

Let’s go Pistons. Get a “W” in Portland!

  4. Steve says:

This dunk by ben gordon is sick!

  5. Ben says:

Where is the thing saying rip talking retirement

  6. george says:

i starting to dislike rodney stuckey i dont think he is the point guard we need like chauncey billups. he is trying to do too much on a team filled with good shooters. i think will should take up the starting point guard spot

    • Steve says:

I agree george.. thats why i believe a rip package needs to be traded for a quality big man..

      Starters
      PG:Bynum
      SG:Stuckey (natural position)
      SF:Prince
      PF:CV31
      C: New big man

      Bench
      Gordon
      Wallace
      Brown
      Atkins
      Wilcox
      Daye
      Jerebko
      Summers

  7. obiwan says:

people who dont know sports is always talking about somebodys a bust a guy CANT be a bust after just a couple games if thats the case…..chaunceys a bust huh he went fourth didnt have a good rookie year…raymond feltons a bust….dwight howards a bust….jamerr nelsons a bust…will bynums a bust uhh..Andrew Bynums a bust huh…. so peyton manning must be a bust to if your rating a guy his first year….what im sayin is alot of guys that i stated had high expectations there first year but all had mediacore seasons….u have to give a player time to devolp before your yellin out bust….the guys a rookie give me a break….do you remember your first week at a new job i bet you werent great at what you did either did your boss come and tell you your doing a bad job? i doubt it lay off the rookies…everybody thought tayshaun was a bust until he got some legit pt so hold off on the bust until the third year

  8. obiwan says:

Joe d need to trade rip to a contender for some prospects and some future draft picks….we all no this team will be competitive but they wont win the gold…they way the nba is setup the way to win is through draft picks and free agency…so picking up up a lopez and chris dudley and a future draft picks from the suns makes since…just a thought

  9. Steve says:

Obiwon.. i have NEVER in my life seen a rookie more overwhelmed than austin daye.. he is completely clueless.. hes been ballin all his life right? then he should know how to inbound a ball right? he should know where out of bounds is right?.. He is too skinny.. he will be punsihed his whole career and dumars is a worthless drafter.. give me dejuan blair any day over Austin Daye. PERIOD!

  10. Dhrumil says:

Charlie Villenueva was a waste of 37 million dollars. He doesn’t pass, forces up dumb shots and plays no defense and doesn’t grab a fucking board! NOW IF YOU TALK TRADE, PUT HIS NAME IN THE MIX!

  11. obiwan says:

dejuan blair has no acl’s genius

  12. Amer ican Prince says:

Steve did you not watch the game last night? You want to trade Rip. Why so Ben Gordon can play more and get abused night after night on d? If ben gordon is not scoring he is useless as he’s proved the last two games. And we have Will bynum who is becoming Mr 4th quarter. Im not saying Ben Gorden is horrible but Rip is a better all around player and Ben Gordon. And stuckey isnt that great on D either, despite what everyone is saying. Having Bynum Stuckey and Gordon makes us too vulnerable, because they basically want to do the same thing SCORE. and theres only one ball to go around (think iverson and carmelo anthony in denver

If you guys didn’t see the 4th quarter or went to bed early man you missed a good quarter. ben and stuckey were on the bench the whole quarter and you saw ball movement we haven’t seen in a couple seasons. Jason Maxiell was awesome that block was a highlight but i cant stress how well he played AND he was fired up almost jawing with the other team singlehandedly. All Im saying Stuckey and Gordon on the bench in the 4th we go on like a 15 to 3 run to start the forth and got the lead down to like 9. (then for some reason i hope someone explains to me Kuester decides to take out Max who was playing awesome and put in Kwame, this is the time the Lakers iced the game. Not a knock on Kwame, but a knock on taking Max out when we had a chance to win and he was the catalyst offensively and defensively)

FYI It was Dejaun Summers who was the calming force for Maxiell when he got a tech. I really like Dejaun Summers and want to see more of him.

Overall even though we lost i loved watching that last quarter, it was awesome and inspiring

  13. obiwan says:

heres a list of skinny players coming out their first years WHO TURNED OUT PRETTY GOOD

    k.g-ppg/10.4-rpg/6.3 (5TH OVERALL)
    josh smith-ppg/9.6 (17 OVERALL)
    Dirk-ppg 8.2/rpg 3.4 (9TH OVERALL)
    tmac-6.1ppg (4TH OVERALL)
    yao ming/9.5ppg (NUMBER UNO)
    danny granger 7.5ppg(17 OVERALL)
    tayshaun-3.3ppg/minutesppg/10.3 (23 OVERALL)
    Austin Daye-3.4ppg/mpg 10.4 (15 OVERALL)
    SEE ANY COMPARISON
THE GUYS THAT ARE IN THE TOP TEN ARE ARGUBLEY HALL OF FAMERS WHERE TAY,JOSH SMITH,DANNY WHO ARE IN THE MIDDLE OF THAT PACK ARE OK PLAYERS BUT NOT GREAST PLAYERS..YOU CANT BE A BUST IF YOUR NOT IN THE TOP 10 IN THE DRAFT,YOUR JUST AN AVERAGE PLAYER MOST OF THE TIME.NOW DARKO IS A BUST SEBESTAIN TELFAIR AND SO ON R BUST GREG ODEN

    SAY WHAT:
McGrady was drafted ninth overall in the first round of the 1997 NBA Draft by the Toronto Raptors. Chicago Bulls General Manager Jerry Krause had arranged a draft-day trade to send Scottie Pippen to the Vancouver Grizzlies for the fourth overall selection, which he would have used to draft McGrady. Krause was forced to call off the deal when Michael Jordan threatened to retire if it was made

  14. Steve says:

American prince.. theres only one problem.. your a homer.. u dont want to see your beloved rip get traded which means u have to throw away your posters, jerseys and bobble heads i get it.. me im a pistons fan but i could care less whos on the team as long as we win.. i dont grow attached to these players like you all do. trade rip.. tank season.. HIGH draft pick.. boom your back in contention.. rips gettin old.. trade him while he has value for a quality big man and worry about his replacement in the draft.. BOOOM.. hate being so right all the time.

    • Amer ican Prince says:

actually im not a homer, and i am with you i want to win, and i would be in favor of trading rip, if it weren’t for the fact he’s a better player more seasoned and he can play different positions without being taking advantage of that;s why i think he’s better, while ben gordon might be great in one area he costs us huge in other areas, rip has no real weaknesses that can be exploited for a full game, that’s why were going to the E CF every year, even though they were missing that differencemaker no player on the team could be taken advantage of on either end of the court. Ben Gordon i compare to Flip Murray or Allen Iverson, one on one basketball player who never developed a full game. And stuckey i think will get better, but i honestly dont know if he will ever shake his score first mentality, Will Bynum has the talent but he also has shown willingness to sacrifice points and contribute in other ways like assists rebounds or hustle. ben gordon went like 1 of 15 sunday and not one other stat increased. that’s what i mean. If there’s something better for Rip fine, but i think losing him puts us at a big disadvantage when it comes to top tier teams. Ben Gordons bulls went to the second round of the playoffs and i dont think we will go any farther than that with him

  15. Steve says:

Obiewon once again all those players u listed didnt look confused once they were on the court.. daye looks like a little kid at the mall who lost his mommy.. its almost pathetic i cringe every time he gets the ball because its usually a brick or a turnover.. B-U-S-T

    • Amer ican Prince says:

but i do have to agree with you on that point, Austin does look like a deer in headlights. but maybe he just needs the right mentor and maybe when tay gets back he can watch him and take those little things that tay does and apply it to his game

  16. obiwan says:

YEA RIP IS GOOD BUT HE’S 31 THIS TEAM IS GOING TO BE GOOD BUT IF THEY WANT THE GOLD YOU GOT TO START OVER AND IT SHOWED YESTERDAY NO LOW POST DEFENSE NO LOW POST OFFENSE…YOU CAN GET ALOT FOR RIP BECAUSE HIS VALUE IS WORTH MORE THAN TAY ESPECAILLY IF THAT TEAM WANTS TO CONTEND…BLAZERS…UTAH….SHOOT HATE TO SAY IT BUT BOSTON…bOSTON HAS SOME BIGS THAT MIGHT TURN OUT PRETTY GOOD…RAY AND PERKINS FOR FUTURE PICKS WHY NOT…YOU GOT TO REBUILD RIGHT NOW IF WE WNAT TO SEE THAT GOLD IN A COUPLE YEARS…IF WE DONT SHOOT FOR IT NOW THE SAME THING IS GONNA HAPPEN WHEN THE PLAYERS GOT TO OLD OFF THE BAD BOY TEAMS…. NOBODY WANTED THOSE GUYS AND THE TEAMS STUNK IT UP…YOU SEE WHAT HAPPEN TO BULLS BECAUSE THEY WANTED TO HOLD ON TO THEIR PLAYERS THEY PASSED UP ON TMAC FOR SCOTTIE PIPPEN I GUY WHO HAS NEVER PROVEN ANYTHING IN THE NBA WITHOUT JORDAN…..THIS TEAM IS HEADED IN THE RIGHT DIRECTIONS BUT IT WILL TAKE SOME SMART DECISIONS AND PATIENCE…. WERE SORT OF LIKE THE HAWKS A FEW YEARS BACK….A COUPLE MORE PICKS FROM BUSTIN IIT LOOSE…I MEAN LET RIP GET ANOTHER RING HE’S PROVEN HE’S ONE OF THE BEST FOUR TIME ALL STAR HE GOT A RING WITH ONE OF THE GREATEST TEAM IN NBA HISTORY…I MEAN BEN HAD TO COME BACK NOBODY WANTED HIM…TAY IS MEDIOCORE…BUT RIP STILL HAS GAS LEFT…. BECAUSE THIS TEAM CLEARLY HAS THE TALENT TO GO FAR

  17. DeAndre says:

First off Charlie V is lazy as hell and Joe needs to not have any input when it comes to drafting, the last two years he’s picked the same 6-8 or 6-9 guy who he thinks is gonna be the next Dirk or KG. Tay has to go and if Rip stays Stuckey has to go or come off the bench and we know that’s not gonna happen bottom line we need a REAL BIG MAN and A REAL PG because if Joe drafts another 6-9 guy and says that same old line “The kid can play” (Walter Sharpe) im gonna lose it.

  18. george says:

after 11games played i think u should be able to trust ur teammates more than just forcing bad shots. when you have 2 prolific scorers in charlie v and ben gordon with you on the floor i would guess they passing to them would be the first option before just driving into 3-4 defenders and force a shot. i think he should let the game come to him

  19. Rashit Flawless (Russia) says:

Look, I tell you 2 things: it was Daye who made an out of bounds pass to Dirk just as he came out.
He really looks like lost on both sides of the court. And I’m sure if he’ll play this way, he won’t get even 10 mins when Prince will be back in lineup.

And on the other side – look like Jerebko’s doin’. He is confident, he knows what he’s doin’ there. And you can never tell these words about Daye.
Maybe he will be a good player. But now Jerebko is the one we can rely on as a good player, and we can’t throw Daye in any close game, because he will spoil it.

  20. obiwan says:

UM JONAS IS PLAYIMG GOOD… BUT KOBE JUST LIT HIM UP 4 40…FAR AS DRAFT PICKS JOE D HAS STRUCK GOL AND STRUCK NOTHIN…WITH DARKO I THINK THAT WAS ALL MARKETING…I DONT THINK JORDAN WANTED TO PAY A GUY (MELO) THAT WASNT GONNA BE THE CENTER OF ATTENTION AND I TIHK MELOS AGENT KNEW THAT TOO…WHEN HAVE YOU EVER HEARD OF A GUY WITH THAT MUCH TALENT AND GOING THAT HIGH IN THE DRAFT, GOING TO A TEAM WHO WAS ONE ROUND AWAY FROM GOING TO THE SHIP…..WOULD MELO MADE THAT BLOCK LETS BE HONEST HERE OR LOCKED UP KOBE COME ON PEOPLE THINK….THOSE GUYS THAT WENT IN 03 WADE/MELO,BOSH NEEDED TO BE ON TEAMS THAT WERE REBUILDING SO THEY COULD HAVE SHOWCASED THEIR TALENTS…AS FAR AS DRAFT PICKS I THINK REBRACCA WAS A GOOD PICK…SO WAS MEMO AND TAY..STUCKEY WAS A GOOD PICK SO WAS AFFOLO AND MAXY…SO 4 OUT OF 6 OF THOSE NAMES ARE ALL STARTERS IN THE NBA…AND 2 WERE EX STARTERS…YEA SHARPE WAS A BAD PICK AND DARKO WAS HORRIBLE BUT WE GOT A SHIP THAT YEAR

    • Steve says:

yeah we got A ship that yr obiwan.. imagine if we had melo bosh or wade commin off the bench on that team.. DYNASTY. dumars fucked up bad.

  21. Steve says:

obiewan i get it there are late round steals.. but dude.. all those players didnt look as lost as austin daye does once he comes on the floor.. i have never cringed when a player touched the ball until now because i know for a face that that ball will end up in the other teams hands after he either gives it to them or he misses.. hes a bum i will never like daye… i like that video but instead of austin daye this dude would have fit the bill much better than austin daye.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rfp7FbsnsbU

  22. Rashit Flawless (Russia) says:

Everyone in the nba would draft darko! That’s because he was the 1st overall way before the draft, he was like a monster pick, a big man who possibly would give us this 5 spot filled to make us complete. But he was a bust and if someone were in place of Joe, he would draft him too, like Memphis drafted a horrible Thabeet, who is not ready for nba, totally not ready, physically, mentally, lack fundamentals, footwork, shot and so on. But if Joe or someone else was there picking a man, he would pick Thabeet over Jennings.

I mean, it was then, it was a long time ago, and we were great instead of this pick. We were the greatest team in the D, we had the smartest plays and picks in the league, I enjoyed every game we played. We were dang good!

And now i don’t understand a thing: yes, we have BG and we have got everything we expected from him and even more. But what the hell was CV deal for? That’s what I wasn’t excited of, I saw how he plays, you saw it, Joe D saw it. Why is it CV? For the money he has now – who is a better player? You know, if it were Blair and Jerebko, I possibly wouldn’t have this question because of Blair’s performance, give him a half of the season and he’ll throw out CV to the bench in any case. But Daye can be good just in one case – if he will develop next season in Prince2.0 with better shot and Prince will go for someone big. Only in this case I understand this draft-pick

  23. Dave says:

You guys have been OK so far, but I think that instead of ditching Iverson after the failed experiment last season, Dumars should have traded away the backcourt stars, and built around AI. Iverson is a really reliable player when happy and he’s a great scorer. I think that with the right deals, a team could have been assembled around AI that could have been a heavy contender for a championship, and if not at least compete and not tarnish AI’s legacy.

I know it sounds like a stretch, but just think about it…

  24. Steve says:

Dave your just a trolling… and rashit prince sucks too, i never like tayshaun.. mike valenti will back me on this one.. he cant guard and isnt explosive on offense.. he had 1 play to symbolize his whole career and you HOMERS are all living on that play as well.. thats the difference between HOMERS and fans like me.

    • Rashit Flawless (Russia) says:

Steve, Prince never was a great player, but he is good for starting five in almost any team – not more than that. He is not a star in my opinion, but he was very useful in our defensive system some years ago. I understand your position, now it’s different story, probably, joe d needs to trade him to get something while he has value

  25. Rashit Flawless (Russia) says:

I thought about it and i say that all Detroit basketball was about were opposite to Iverson’s basketball mind.
It could be something to do like you said, but Iverson did not show he is that good to make him a person to build a team around, not anymore. He did all wrong and Joe decided to do what he did. McDyess would left us anyway so would Sheed, we didn’t have cap space to sign BG and CV, because it was no chance that AI accept vet.minimum contract, because he was a part of the team, and if you want to build a team around AI, he must be payed. It’s a bad move you are talking about, YOU think about it. AI had so many chances to be a leader in Memphis and I DO NOT BELEIVE he can’t throw Conley to the bench. But it took him 3 games to quit. If it were the half of the season and AI were still on the bench – ok. But not after 3 games. This man was unprepared to go anywhere from Denver and probably was very upset and threated this trade as disrespect. And in Detroit he saw he is not THE MAN anymore. That was the end. No one will build anything with him in a roster anymore, he will not win a ring, because if he was capable at some time to do it – he missed all his chances. And now he lost something important to his game and we will never win a ring ever. Because he is not a bench player as he think

  26. Colton Keck says:

You gotta be kidding me , yeah we miss rip alot but com on man , prince is good for one thing and one thing only , guarding kobe . Seeing that we play them twice a year i think i could live with us getting rid of him .

    • Rashit Flawless (Russia) says:

he IS good, but not THAT good. He is a good defender, but hey, he doesnt worth his money, just imagine who could we have for 10.500.000$?
Lets say that Kaman is 10.5$
      Bogut is10$
Nene is 10.5$ he made 20+10+5+4+4 tonight, imagine that. Even they have melo, chauncey, j.r there, he still can score A LOT and not only score points
      Okafor, David West, Chandler, Okur
anynoe could be better for our team for 10.5$

  27. obiwan says:

yea but if im boston i’ll pick up iverson i think kg,and pierce can calm that down just sayin he would fit best their

  28. obiwan says:

steve you dont know what your talkin about you never been a piston fan my dude you were only a fan for the ride and now that the ride is over your jumping ship…thats ok you’ll be back

  29. Rashit Flawless (Russia) says:

there are rumors that AI is going to NY and man that’s stupid

  30. sam says:

i dont understand why people come here and get all bent out of shape over losing you guys need to understand we are rebuilding its going to take time like how we first started rebuilding in i think it was 2000 or 2001 it took us 4 years to win it all we are no where near make it to the finals EVEN if we got a chris bosh i dont even understand why people want us to make it in the playoffs why would we want to be the 8 7 or 6 team and get beat 4-0 by orlando boston or cavs like the cavs did to us last year i would rather not make the playoffs this year so that we can get a lottery pick and hope for a 5 6 7 pick and pick up a great center or a low post scorer

  31. dave says:

Nat’s wallpaper schedule has the portland game at 730, its a 10pm tip

  32. Rashit Flawless (Russia) says:

This gonna bring BG and CV down, they came to win, it’s a team chemistry, man
It’s Joe D who couls say “we will fight for picks this year” but he even refused that this is a rebuilding, he said we are a playoff team. Guys like CV sould have this swag and experience – make the PlayOffs. it’s like a fresh blood.
And why not trade someone for the picks?

I mean look at Wilcox. He is athletic. He is big. If he will not fit during few months, I think there will be a sacramento to take him for a pick. Or look at Maxzilla, I think it’s about Kuester now, who’s trying to build right rotation and he limits Maxiell’s mins. If it will go wrong for Maxiell – trade him for whoever to waive+pick

  33. DetroitBasketballllllll says:

STEVE shut the hell up man u literally have no idea wat you are talking about. How can a guy(austin Daye) be a BUST 11 games into his career? he’s barely even played. Also Joe D hasnt been that horrible at drafting either. the Darko pick wasnt bad at the time what was he gonna do draft Melo? NO tay was going into his second season and he showed signs of greatness in the playoffs how about Wade NO we had chauncy and Rip Bosh? NOPE we had sheed. Anybody can look at a decision years later and say it was bad but almost noone objected to it at the time. We won the championship the year we drafted Darko so shut up.

  34. Amer ican Prince says:

oh and i forgot to mention that was an amazing recap Rashid. Really good job capturing the game great job. i loved reading it. there is a need 4 Rashid. : )
