Round One Game Two – Pistons vs. Cavaliers

Posted · 53 Comments

The Pistons are down 1-0 in their first round series against the Cavaliers. Things must change if Detroit plans on sneaking out The Q with an upset, and they know it.

Will Bynum:

“We got to be more together, It’s not going to take one person to stop LeBron. It’s going to take all five of us, and maybe the coaching staff — and the bench. We got to do what we got to do to stop the guy and try to make other players beat us.” Via MLive

Michael Curry:

“What we have to do is be more aggressive at whatever we try to take away. We got to be aggressive with it. If we trap him, we have to be more aggressive. If we try to contain him and make him shoot contested jumpers, we got to do exactly that.  We have to keep him out of the paint. He was 8-of-9 in the paint, hit the half-court shot and then was 4-of-10 outside of the paint. That’s where we got to try and keep him. We didn’t have LeBron’s (isolations) or post-ups good enough. We got to do a much better job of that, and get the ball out of his hands and makes some of those other players make plays.” Via MLive

Easier said than done when it comes to LeBron but as long as some adjustments are made Detroit has a chance to upset the Cavs in a building they just don’t lose in. Also important, Detroit has to stay in this game from start to finish and not let the Cavs build a daunting lead.

A little smile before tip:

Some old school history between the Cavaliers and the Pistons back in the 80’s you may not be aware of. Here is a little video history lesson courtesy of a Rick Mahorn elbow and a Bill Laimbeer, Brad Daugherty fight.  The good old days….

Tip off is at 8:00 PM and will be nationally broadcast on TNT. Good news for those of you missing the local flavor or George Blaha and Special K, Fox Sports will also be broadcasting the game on FSN Plus (download channel numbers). If you can’t catch either broadcast you can listen live over at 1130 AM WDFN or follow the game through your computer at NBA.com.

Feel free to leave your thoughts in the Comments of Chat Live at game time.

  2. DEL says:

we need to be aggressive! there are really few things to add agret game 1, and we can really beat them!!!!!! Stuck and Rip has to take offense, and Sheed and Tay defense. and game 2 is our game baaaaaaaby!

  3. Cone (Mexico) says:

Really expecting an upset tonight, it could be soooooo sweeeeett. But we have to play our best basketball of the season and I think we have the power to do it so…
    GOO PISTONS!!!!!

  4. DEL says:

HAHA what is this? is this PISTONS basketball?? after 1st quarter i see that there will be no upset and no chances! we need new young players and cap space! bye bye sheed, bye bye dice, bye bye AI ( never been real Piston)

  5. deeefan says:

I hope the PISTONS WEAK UP AND SMELL A WIN SOME HOW SOME WAY. they are playing weak they have forgotten how they are. AND MOST OF ALL WE NEED ANOTHER COACH for NEXT SEASON!

  6. Chungi says:

kwame doesn’t seem to have any idea what to do,hes been making bad passes and rebound attempts all the time now

  7. I says:

Pistons are friggin pissin me off. What the hell…this better turn out to be a win in the favor of pistons.

  8. TP22 says:

    Thank you Amir.
I have never been so happy to see an almost fight.

  9. DEL says:

FIRE CURRY!!!!!! no offense! it looks like it is something like this: pass ball to Rip or Stuck and see what happen! FIRE CURRY!

  10. i am a pistons fan but says:

WOW THATS WHY I HATE THE CAVS AND THIER FANS. A DETROIT SUCKS CHANT. OK THANKS CLEVELAND. I HATE TO SAY IT BUT WE CANT MATCH UP TO THE CAVS IF WE DONT PLAY WITH ANY HEART. AND THE PISTONS AREN’T

  11. Mikey1215 says:

Damn right TP22. Lebron was upset over the “hard” foul. Cmon!

  12. Chungi says:

    pass to Rip,pass to stuckey,shoot…what the hell?there aren’t going anywhere with this…

  13. Bobby says:

Charlotte deserved to be in the playoffs more than us.

At least they would have made an effort.

  14. baller says:

pistons better come out strong in the 3rd and win..right now they playin like its pre season man

  15. I says:

Lol….leave the place, your not a pistons fan…its pretty apparent. We are aware that Detroit sucks this year, and we don’t hate cleveland because it is such a great team, we hate them because they are full of themselves (i.e Detroit sucks chant). And your analogy is retarded.

  16. DIE HARD PISTONS FAN says:

I HATE 2 SAY IT, BUT WE’RE GONNA GET SWEPT. WE’RE NOT GONNA WIN A GAME IN THIS SERIES IF WE CONTINUE 2 PLAY THIS “STYLE” OF PISTON BASKETBALL. THE CLEVELAND FANS ARE THE COCKIEST IN THE LEAGUE. “I AM A PISTON FAN BUT” U R EXACTLY RIGHT. WE’RE NOT PLAYIN WITH ANY HEART. SHEED, RIP, AND TAY HAVE ALL THROWN IN THE TOWEL. THE ONLY GUYS THAT SEEM 2 CARE R DYESS AND STUCK.

TRADE TAYSHAUN, AMIR, AND JASON 2 TORONTO FOR CHRIS BOSH
TRADE RIP 2 THE CLIPPERS 4 MARCUS CAMBY

  17. Chris says:

game was over in the first 5 minutes of the game. I cant believe Im saying this but, I can smell a sweep.

    Maybe next season Piston fans.

  18. Ilovethisgame says:

I think we as pistons fans need to own up to the fact that we wronged Allen Iverson. He always carried the majority of the blame for the pistons record, a lot of us even blamed for the fall of the pistons. One thing though he tried, he put effort, he might have made bad decisions but he always tried. This team has no effort, and don’t even give you the confidence they can win.
A.I. joined a train wreck, he didn’t cause one; we unfairly blamed him, and he served as a scapegoat. In a way we deserve to be embarrassed because we embarrassed him.
Overall this is all Joe Dumars’ fault, he needs to stop making all these “genius” decisions and do what makes the most sense.

  19. Jayborne says:

    So yeah…….

    Marginal Talent
    Bad Coach
    Unmotivated team
    Has Been-itis

    =

    Broom

  20. Th3 Answ3r says:

Woot! We sure are gonna win! [Sarcasm -.-]

  21. Tycoon says:

    One word – “Hopeless”.

Hope MC will never taste a playoff victory.

  22. MC should be a janitor says:

We need to appreciate our bench more.

  23. Chad says:

So.. Bynum Hermann Dyess and Kwame just went on a 24-3 run…

Who wouldve thought Bynum would be our best player this season?

Joe, swallow your pride and give the point to Bynum.

  24. Sable says:

Why Curry why? The bench comes in plays with a whole lot of energy and somehow gets the lead down to single digits. Reward them. Let them play. They engineered this improbably come back. Win or lose, they are the ones who brought the fight. Let them close it out. You bring back Dyess and Rip and we try to go back to executing when it was energy that proved so successful? Leave the fricken energy team out there.

  25. Pistonsfan says:

can anyone tell me why curry is so obsessed with kwame brown? Kwame must be shacking up with someone on the coaching staff. Curry should play maxiell at least 20 minutes a night!! this is so ridiculous! maxiell mostly got garbage time minutes. i hate our team so much right now.

  26. KG says:

    OMG!!!! USE THE BENCH MORE!!

THEY ARE MORE PRODUCTIVE THAN THE STARTERS

    AND ur RYT CHAD

    joe SHOULD SWALLOW HIS PRIDE

    GO PISTONS

  27. JMAX54 says:

Way to go Amir!! You should be rewarded more minutes for your aggressiveness which the entire team is lacking.. =)

  28. Mark says:

I wish Curry would’ve left the bench in. I think we would have lost anyway, but they deserved the playing time.

  29. Chad says:

Xurry doesnt have an obsession with Kwame… Kwame had more DNPs than anyone this season, besides walter sharp.

Besides, Kwame has been playing his ass off.

  30. Sable says:

Kwame has been a better rebounder than Max. He’s also defended the post better. I don’t have a problem with Kwame playing. He’s been solid for us with the things we expect him to do. He’s also been better at the offensive end than I expected he would be.

I just think tonight is a prime example of how Curry has managed us out of games with his decisions. He decides to make a change and we lose all the momentum we had.

I don’t think we would’ve won anyway, but at least make Cleveland fight for it which is what the bench did tonight.

  31. Th3 Answ3r says:

Another smart decision by smart ass Curry!!! Woot! Way to go coach! You take out the bench players when it’s clearly shown that they play better than the starters (excluding Dyess)! Gotta hand it to you! If only their was a runner up reward for best coach. I’m sure you’d win it!

P.S. All of that was sarcasm (except the Dyess part) O_o!

  32. Sable says:

What’s the reality here? Sheed, Tay, and Rip aren’t 100% and they’ve logged a lot of minutes over the years; high intensity playoff minutes at that. They are wearing down. In a perfect world, we’d have young studs taking over the starting spots and they’d be moving to the bench, but we don’t have that luxury yet. Nevertheless, it’s become quite apparent that you need energy and young legs to cover the court against a team like Cleveland. It’s not in indictment against our starters. Age catches up with everyone. Heck, look at Big Ben over on the other bench.

  33. Alwayzreal says:

Hey Natalie can you post that picture of the explosion that you normally put up after we had got knocked out of the ECF the last couple years with the big heading reading”IT’S OVER” except this time put it up immediately with the heading “IT’S REALLY OVER” I really pray and hope that Joe D does not bring back Curry as a head coach next season and I hope that he can man up and say that he screwed up our beloved Pistons chemistry with that trade, forget about cap room and money..We are not gonna attract any of those big names….I’m done,I’m drained..Natalie can you please put that up immediately because it’s really over this time also change the color of the page to all black………

  34. LiamJones says:

Jayborne’s got it. We’re not good. I’m a diehard Pistons fan and wanted to say it earlier, but figured everyone would jump all over me for “not being loyal”. Thinking this Pistons “team” could knock off this Cavs team is the equivalent of following the cow in front of you into the slaughter house. I hate to say it, but the Pistons just don’t have it this year.

    P.S.
If we were going to lose to anybody in this fashion, did it HAVE to be the Cavs?! I mean, c’mon… ANYBODY else but the LeBr… eh, Cavs. (Atleast the Garne…. er, Celtics are getting what they deserve this year.)

  35. KleenGee says:

Will any team beat the Cavs? Lakers? Did Stern already book the finals?

Kobe vs Lebron = Stern’s NBA Stimulus package

  36. KleenGee says:

just had a bad thought: what if Denver wins the finals with Chauncey? Will Dyess kick himself forever?

Pistons owe it to Dyess to play a whole lot better than this. If they don’t, the one who talked him into staying in Detroit should pay him the money he left on the table in Denver.

  37. Sable says:

He didn’t like how he was treated in Denver the last time he was there. He’s an emotional guy and I just can’t see him playing for a team that he has no trust or faith in.

Dyess is playing hard, but he’s missed his fair share of open shots. A couple of other things that annoyed me about today’s game. Sheed didn’t score well in the post, but he had his jumper going. Why not keep running pick and pops with him. He was hitting mid-range shots and from deep. They didn’t bother going back to that, however. This is where we miss Chauncey, but I would think the coaching staff could pick those things out too.

In general, the Pistons have had a horrible offense this year. Offenses are supposed to get you good shots. Ours hasn’t worked all season long. Curry was limited offensively as a player. If he’s going to stick around, they need to bring in an assistant who knows offense and turn the reigns over to him.

Heck, even defensively they haven’t looked prepared. I dunno.

  38. KleenGee says:

thanks Sable. Didn’t know about Dyess and the trust thing with Denver.

It would be great to have an offensive specialist on the staff. Maybe someone who could eventually take over for Curry!

  39. The Fan says:

    :::::THIS SUMMER:::::
    drop Rasheed
    drop Tayshawn
    drop Hamilton

3 guard rotation should be Bynum, Stuckey and Affallo

  40. KG says:

USE THE BENCH IN GAME 3! and that’s the bottomline ryt deyr

  41. Rico Suave says:

I’d rather watch the “scrubs” hands down over the starters any day. Exception- Rip & Dyess.

The Pistons had plenty of chances at the end of the season to get out of this damn 8th spot. I wouldn’t be surprised if some of the key vets were trying to miss the playoffs all together.

Big changes this offseason. Sheed- enjoy your reunion with Larry Brown. Tay- enjoy heading home, you would look great in a Clippers uni.

  42. Rico Suave says:

Also- was Curry doing his Art Shell confused face impression on the side lines?

  43. Chris says:

The starters looks reall old to me. Look at the successful teams nowadays, they’re usually young and athletic e.g. Denver, Magic, Cavs, Lakers,Bulls<Philly and many more. We use to be that way, back in 2004-2006 but they’ve become real old now..

  44. Chad says:

Correction, Curry was limited offensively and defensively. Not sure how he got people to pay him money to play basketball.

  45. Walter5 says:

Sable’s right.. Curry was just a benchwarmer back in the day.. He looks like MJ.. hahaha!

  46. Baby Eater says:

kanye west song “heartless” sums up the pistons effort.

  47. Detroitfan095 says:

they arent even trying but there isnt much they can do since the NBA already has the cavs and the lakers in the Finals already.

  48. Amber says:

    Lol Baby Eater
Yes, well, this was all expected.
Cleveland is surprisingly a balanced team, and Detroit is far from balanced. I’m shocked Detroit even got within 8 at one point.
It’s certainly Joe D.’s biggest mistake yet.

  49. Connor says:

So without free throws, the pistons won 69-62.
Another nice stat, Cleveland made more FT’s than FG’s.

  50. pistonsfan101 says:

OK. The only reason why the Pistons started off with a 24-3 run in the fourth was because LeBron was on the bench. If it were the Pistons starters, I am pretty sure they would have done the same thing.

I also do not like the idea of Bynum starting over Stuckey. Stuckey is not an energy guy, Bynum is.!

  51. Steve says:

    Great moves Joe D……
    Chauncey for A.I.
    Curry as a coach…
stuckey the future…when Bynum is outplaying him…
    Tanking the season…
Wow, we should just hire Isah Thomas…
    This is embarassing….

  52. rey says:

worst coach,MC….benching AI.. look what happen to piston…

  53. Downtown Sly says:

Such a frustrating first two games of the series. Where is the energy to start the game??? I would like to think we might come out with more fight on Friday, and like some of the others on here, I would love to see Bynum start. Or something different!! Another Pistons site I check http://highsockslegend.blogspot.com/ had an excellent breakdown of the Bynum playing-time issue. Interesting read, but frustrating at the same time, too. C’mon Pistons!
